At Reunion, many of our patients come to us after an injury or having surgery. Because of this, we’re passionate about making sure that our community knows the best practices and recommendations to follow during recovery.

In this blog, we’re going to go over some of the most common recommendations to adhere to if you’re in recovery. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you’re interested in inpatient rehabilitation or would like to learn more about our mission here at Reunion.

New Year, New Opportunities

The holidays are over and the new year is here, which means it’s the perfect time to focus on your health and wellness. Many people underestimate the importance of focusing on healing, but failing to prioritize healing can have detrimental effects on your health and even long-term consequences.

By placing an emphasis on your recuperation, you can not only set yourself up for success in the future, but gain the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re taking care of yourself.

If you’ve recently experienced an injury or had surgery, then you may be wondering what you should be doing to take care of your body. Let’s go over some of the top things to consider during a period of healing…

What’s on your plate?

Many people don’t think about food as part of the healing puzzle, but it can play a big role in the way that your body repairs itself. Thinking about what’s on your plate is always a good idea, but it’s especially beneficial if you’re healing.

Some of the best foods for a safe recovery include:

  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Apples
  • Oatmeal
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Oranges

You’ll notice that many of the foods listed are hydrating - there’s a reason for that! Many people who are in recovery are dehydrated, so placing an emphasis on hydrating foods can be a great way to be proactive and make sure that your body has the resources it needs to thrive.

Follow Doctor’s Orders

From how much rest you get to how much pain medication you take, it’s extremely important that you follow the orders your doctor gives you. Consider writing down all of their instructions after you’ve received them, so that you can be sure your recovery goes as smoothly as possible.

When it comes to your recovery, it’s important that you advocate for yourself and ask any questions that you have. Don’t be afraid to be persistent and get the answers that you need to feel confident in your recovery.

Do What You Can

While everyone will have a different ability level after surgery or an injury, it’s important that you do what you can during recovery. For some people, this may mean walking to the bathroom with assistance. For others, it might mean going for a short walk or going up the stairs.

Asking your medical team about what activity levels are best is a good first step. While it’s important not to push yourself too far, it can also be beneficial to make sure that you are getting some exercise.

REUNION TIP: Think about if there’s someone in your life who can help you get some exercise and hold you accountable. Having someone on your journey with you can not only boost your morale, but help you stay on track.

Incision Care

If you currently have an incision, then you probably understand how important it is to care for it. Making incision care a priority is one of the best ways you can set yourself up for success and ensure that your incision heals well.

Keeping a close eye on your incision is one of the best ways to catch an infection or another problem early, so make sure that you stay watchful and don’t be afraid to seek medical help if you have a concern.

Consider Rehab

Some people are unsure about whether or not rehab is the right choice for them, but it can be an extremely beneficial way to ensure a safe recovery. Starting rehab at Reunion means you’ll have access to a comprehensive medical team that can support you throughout your healing journey and make sure that you have the resources you need to thrive.
